Character Curriculum
Here at Holland House Infant and nursery school, we are passionate to expand not only your child’s academic progress but also create well-rounded characters who are prepared for the world we live in and know they can make a difference, no matter how big or small.
Our academic learning is underpinned by a strong emphasis on personal, character development. Our values permeate through everything we do, and how we behave towards one another, ourselves and our world to ensure a safe, caring and happy school where children feel valued and educated. As a Rights Respecting School, they learn responsibility and develop a strong moral compass so they understand and value their place in the world whilst respecting the differences that we have. It helps create a moral framework, based on equality and respect for all that lasts a lifetime, as they grow into engaged, responsible members of society. Their sense of self-worth and worth of others is strengthened through our golden thread of wellbeing that runs through our curriculum approach.
We aim to develop our pupils’ characters through the growth of relationships that define us as human. Through our curriculum, we develop a set of competencies (behaviours) which enable each and every one of our pupils to be the best little person they can be. These competencies are split into ‘me’, ‘others’ and ‘our world’.
The character curriculum is based on the famous ‘Winnie the Pooh’s, 50 things to do before you’re 5 and ¾’. We have created this curriculum to expose our children to experiences including relationships, social interaction’s and culture. The experiences involve problem solving, interaction and most importantly life skills, such as helping at home, preparing meals and recycling, which are all fundamental for pupil wellbeing.
Our character curriculum includes a range of experiences that are planned into our school Curriculum (with some requiring family support) with children evidencing these through pictures and witness statements from family members. Evidence can be collated in a pollypocket and once they have completed it all, can hand this into school.If your child completes this curriculum by the end of the year they will become a character champion, receiving a character champion award in school. It is advised to complete the curriculum by the end of the year, you should try and complete one a week.
