The Learnosaurs/Embedding our Values
As a school we recognise that consistency in expectations of behaviour, rights, responsibilities and values across the school is important to who we are and well-being is the golden thread throughout this. The role of teaching and learning in positive behaviour management is to present pupils with a positive image of themselves, others and the relationships that they build around them. The emphasis is on giving pupils plenty of opportunities to become effective communicators, enabling them to monitor and regulate their own behaviour wherever possible, and to help them establish consistency in their relationships and in their interaction with their peers and their environment. At Holland House, our aim is to nurture pupil’s self-confidence, and model sensitivity and respect towards others through an understanding of our rights and responsibilities. These are our building blocks; our pillar core rights and responsibilities that determine everything we do. In order to understand and respect these rights and responsibilities, we asked all members of staff in our community to articulate the values that they believed were of paramount importance to teach our children. The values that were chosen were ones that we felt could guide children to make the right decisions when it comes to their behaviour, and to influence their judgement of what is most important in life.
Our visions and values are referred to throughout the school day and are fully embedded within our learning environments. We weave our values into everything we do, creating a culture of respect and belonging for all.
Positive Learning Behaviours at Holland House
As part of a review of our Behaviour Policy, we introduced The Learnosaurs to Holland House and with the help of the Learnosaurs we were able to develop a new Positive Behaviour Policy!
How we designed and implemented the Learnosaurs
Following consultation with children, parents, governors and staff, we identified different learning behaviours that encourage children to be independent, confident learners. We then created our own Learnosaurs to represent these positive learning behaviours.
The Learnosaurs
Each Learnosaur has a set of attributes to support effective learning. By teaching children how to be good learners, and also reflective about how they have learnt, we are developing pupil independence and increasing levels of engagement.
Pupils are rewarded with values tokens if they have shown characteristics of one or more of The Learnosaurs. Each class has a Learnosaur 'wheel' (see below), which recognises and supports the development of good learning behaviours and values, and works in partnership with our positive behaviour policy.
We introduced the Resourcefulrex, Reflectadon, Perservereosaurus and the Reciprodactyl as the Learnosaurs to the children at at Holland House. Each Learnosaur has its own positive learning attributes and the children across the school learn these and then try and emulate their positive learning behaviours.
Article 28 (right to education)
Every child has the right to an education.
Primary education must be free and different forms of secondary education must be available to every child. Discipline in schools must respect children’s dignity and their rights. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.
Article 29 (goals of education)
Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the
full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.
